A Hoyo (hole) refers, by extension, to a valley in the Vuelta Abajo territory in the mountainous region of Pinard el Rio.

The cigar factory took the name of this valley in 1867. Hoyo de Monterrey, one of the oldest factories in Cuba, remains today one of the leading brands of Cuban cigars, offering a range of slightly milder cigars. The Le Hoyo sub-brand is more full-bodied.

At the heart of the Vuelta Abajo region, renowned for being the benchmark for tobacco, the village of San Juan y Martinez is home to the "Hoyo de Monterrey" plantation established in 1860 by Mr. José Gener, a Spanish immigrant. It was only in 1865 that he created his own brand, before launching the "Le Hoyo" range in 1970 to meet the demand for stronger cigars, particularly aimed at the Swiss market.

The success was immediate, and the factory quickly became the largest on the island, employing the greatest number of torcedors. Even after the acquisition of the firm by businessmen Fernandez and Palacio, the brand continued its ascent and is now produced alongside other famous vitolas such as the "Châteaux" series from Davidoff in 1940, as well as Punch. By the late 1950s, the Hoyo de Monterrey factory produced 13% of the Cuban cigars exported worldwide.
