This naturally filtered luminosity produces wide, thin leaves that are very little veiny and exhibit remarkable elasticity—essential qualities for a quality wrapper. The Ecuador Connecticut stands out for its light, golden color and its creamy, sweet notes, while the Ecuador Habano offers darker shades and more complex aromas.

The regions of Guayaquil, Quinindé, and Esmeraldas concentrate the majority of production, with factories primarily working for export. The Ecuadorian subsidiary of General Cigar is one of the major players in this industry, producing millions of wrappers each year for the world’s largest brands. Although Ecuador is primarily a supplier of wrappers rather than a country of premium cigars, a few local factories offer entirely Ecuadorian vitolas that allow one to appreciate the terroir in its purity, featuring very characteristic herbal, creamy, and slightly peppery notes.
