Peru is one of the most exciting new frontiers in premium cigars, with production gaining momentum since the 2000s thanks to the immense tobacco resources of its Amazonian regions of San Martín and Ucayali. Peruvian cigars reveal a unique tropical terroir with complex and unexpected aromas, still largely unknown to enthusiasts.

The San Martín region, in the Peruvian Amazon foothills, is the primary cradle of local premium tobacco. At an altitude of 600 to 1,200 meters, the climatic conditions—warmth, abundant but well-distributed rainfall, and rich alluvial soils—allow for the cultivation of long, well-developed leaves with deep, mineral aromas. Peruvian tobacco presents a very original aromatic profile: notes of earth after rain (petrichor), fresh leaves, dried citrus, and a slight bitterness of cocoa that clearly distinguish it from Central American tobaccos.
The strength is generally medium to robust, with a slow and progressive aromatic development. Several artisanal factories have emerged in recent years, notably Tabacalera del Oriente in Tarapoto and a few independent producers who market their output under brands like Inca Secret or Amazonian. These cigars, still produced in small batches, are primarily available in Peru and through a few specialized importers in Europe.
For the adventurous connoisseur, Peruvian cigars represent a rare opportunity: to discover a terroir free from excessive marketing, to explore unprecedented aromas at still accessible prices, and to participate in the nascent history of a region that could well establish itself as a global reference in the coming decades.
